Entertainment gets “Smarter”

Clearly the world is changing.  The information highway revolutionized how our generation communicates for both work and play. Technical devices are getting smaller, faster and smarter. And consumers are also changing the way they expect to interact, inform and entertain themselves. We now live in a generation of “smart” users.

One technology change that is taking storm in 2014 are smart TVs. Consumers can merge all their home entertainment needs onto one screen.  Sitting on living room couches across the globe, users can watch TV, download apps, surf the web, or check out new videos and music.

A recent report from Opera Software highlights 3 key predictions for what to watch in Smart TV trends this year.

1. Internet Video growth on TV.
Online video, like on-demand films, series and clips as well as user generated videos will drive content demand.  The report mentions that fans of streaming web video on their mobiles/tablets will migrate from watching on their hand held to the largest screen in the home (TV).  The nice thing about the TV is that it bridges generations so as the trend evolves, we should expect both young and old to migrate back to the family living room.  Imagine teenagers watching their favorite internet show or grandparents viewing a recent video of their grandchildren performing at a dance recital – maybe even together at the same time.  What a nice change!

2. Interactive TV ads
Could TV ads be more useful?  According to Opera Software – yes.  They claim advertisements may become more responsive thanks to web connectivity and HTML5 adoption. “An ad for an upcoming concert could feature an overlay that shows in real time how many tickets are still available for sale, or a commercial for a local pizza chain can include an option for you to order home-delivery – all from your TV screen,” said Mr. Rajaram, Head of TV. “This will help make ads more relevant and easier for viewers to reach the products that truly interest them, in a ‘leanback’ way and without having to turn to other devices.”

3. Smart TVs become more affordable
The general feeling is that Smart TVs will see massive growth in the low-to mid-range price point, making them accessible to a broader audience.  As the founder of Creative Choice Group and an investor in a number of low-income housing communities in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, I can say that I see first-hand the desire for our residents to have access to products and services that enhance and enrich their lives.  We are continually seeking ways to bring advanced technology to our residences – including high-speed internet, computer labs, security monitoring and even the most energy efficient appliances.

There is no doubt that content owners will have a corner on the market.  I anticipate much of what we have access to as users/consumers will be decided through lawsuits and litigation.  The adage that “content is king” may be true. However, with knowledge comes power. And as consumers we hold the ability to put an effective use to that knowledge as we decide when, where and what we watch.  Entertainment is definitely more than fun… it is about being “Smart” in 2014 and beyond.
